Standley Technical Services - PC & Laptop Repair For Home Users

Now we make IT simple, we make IT work... for home users too. Just because we don`t usually advertise for home PC or laptop repairs it doesn`t mean we haven`t been doing them. Standley Technical Services (STS) mainly provide IT services for business, but see all too often that people are being advised badly and losing data or replacing their PC when it could have been fixed quite easily.

• Advice

  Free friendly advice is available with regards to a problem you have or something you want to try and achieve. It could be as simple as a wireless broadband connection or as tricky as “reliable” automated backup; just ask us; if we know we will tell you, if we don`t we can point you in the right direction.

• Repairs

  There are 4 main reasons that your pc may need a repair and it is accurate diagnosis of these that decide whether you get your PC back with or without your old software and data files. Obviously there are many more possibilities, but for home PC`s these are the most common:
  1. Your PC has become overwhelmed with spyware, mailware or adware.
     Virus`s are not so common nowadays, but the new breed of threat concentrates on trying to take control of your PC to spy on your browsing habits, key log your banking details or use your broadband connection to relay spam emails.
  2. Corrupt boot sector or registry due to a dirty shutdown or power failure.
     Sometimes you just have to turn your PC off and most of the time you will get away with it; but the time that you have a “power cut” whilst your PC was very busy you probably won`t.
  3. Dead or faulty power supply.
     The reasons that power supplies fail vary from poor design and bad components to old age.
  4. Hard drive failure.
     This is the worst case for you and if you don`t have a backup, don`t let just anyone have a go!

• Maintenance

  PC`s are like modern vans, they don`t need much maintenance and rely on just a few things to keep them running. The heatsinks need cleaning and the fans need checking.
  
  Internet and email users will at some time pick up something that shouldn`t be on their system. You will need some hardware and or software to try and reduce this. We can help you with this and ensure that your PC is clean to begin with.

• Install / Setup

  If you need help with any of the following we are there for you. Some things are better for us to do on the bench at our workshop and some can only be done at your home or office.
  1. Operating system install
  2. Router or wireless network setup
  3. Printer or scanner – shared printing or network printer / scanner setup
  4. Ethernet over power – saves running cable and is more reliable than wireless
  5. Installing any internal or external device to your pc or network
  6. Hardware firewall or adult website blocking
  7. Home server for media streaming
  8. Email account creation or setup
